HRW: Saudi-Led Yemen Coalition still Using Cluster Bombs

Human Rights Watch on Sunday published new evidence alleging a Saudi-led coalition is using internationally banned cluster bombs in Yemen, urging it to stop such attacks that were harming civilians.

The New York-based watchdog said it documented the use of three types of cluster munitions in Yemen, where Saudi-led warplanes have pounded positions of Shiite rebels and allies loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh since March 26.

Saudi Border Guard Dies in Yemen Shelling

Shelling from Yemen has killed a Saudi border guard and wounded seven others, the latest casualties along the kingdom's southern frontier, the interior ministry said on Sunday.

The attack happened at 6:30 pm (1530 GMT) Saturday when shells "from across the border with Yemen" hit their patrol, the ministry said in comments carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

IS Razes Notorious Syria Regime Jail in Palmyra

The Islamic State jihadist group Saturday demolished a prison in the Syrian city of Palmyra, a monitor said, eliminating what was for decades one of the country's most feared detention centers.

The jail was "largely destroyed after IS planted explosives inside and around it", 10 days after the jihadists seized Palmyra from regime forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Ministry: Libya Militia Frees All Detained Tunisians

Dozens of Tunisians held in Libya by a militia forming part of an alliance ruling Tripoli have been freed, Tunisia's foreign ministry announced Saturday.

"All the Tunisians being held in Libya have been freed. The final group was released today," the ministry said in a statement, without giving numbers.

Car Bomb Kills 12 Rebels in South Yemen

A bomb-laden vehicle parked near an arms depot exploded killing 12 Iran-backed rebels and wounding eight others in southern Yemen's Abyan province on Saturday, a local official told AFP.

The official said the attack in the coastal city of Shoqra was carried out by local anti-rebel fighters, who are backed by a Saudi-led coalition pounding Shiite Huthi militia and their allies since March 26.

Iraq Forces Edge Towards Ramadi

Iraqi forces retook an area west of Ramadi on Saturday as they pressed their operation aimed at sealing off the jihadists who captured the city two weeks ago, commanders said.

"The Iraqi army and the Hashed al-Shaabi liberated the Anbar traffic police building in the 5K area west of Ramadi after a fierce fight," an army officer said.

IS Launches Assault on Key Northeast Syria City

The Islamic State jihadist group launched an assault on the largely Kurdish city of Hasakeh in northeast Syria on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. 

The attack came a day after Kurdish militia executed 20 civilians accused of supporting the extremists, the monitoring group said.

Egypt Deports U.S. Citizen and Son of Islamist Figure

Egypt on Saturday deported a U.S.-Egyptian citizen sentenced to life in jail on charges of destabilizing the country as part of a crackdown on the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, officials said.

Mohamed Soltan, 27, whose father is a leading Brotherhood official, was arrested in August 2013 and sentenced to life in April.

An Islamic State-affiliated group in Saudi Arabia has urged more attacks against Shiites, after IS claimed two bomb attacks on mosques in the kingdom.

An IS suicide bomber on Friday blew himself up at the entrance of a mosque in Eastern Province, killing three people, exactly seven days after the jihadist group attacked another mosque in the oil-rich region.

Rouhani Calls for 'Free' Legislative Vote in Iran

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that the government aims to hold "free" parliamentary elections next year, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"The success of the government to is to hold free, healthy and competitive elections," Rouhani said in a speech to governors and provincial governors.
