Chavez Backs his 'Brothers' Gadhafi, Assad Against ‘Yankees’

Venezuela's firebrand President Hugo Chavez on Saturday reiterated his support for ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, calling them "brothers."

"I ask God for the life of our brother Gadhafi... No one knows where Gadhafi is, I think he went to the desert," Chavez told official television VTV.

Hizbullah Forms Committee to Study Amending STL Cooperation Protocol

Head of U.N. Probe into Syria Expects Access to Country

An international commission of inquiry into rights violations in Syria said on Friday it hoped to be allowed to visit the country, although it had not yet been in contact with Syrian authorities.

"Our hope is that the Syrian Arab Republic will cooperate and give us access to different authorities, and visit different locations," Sergio Pinheiro, the head of the international commission of inquiry on Syria told reporters.

Somali Shebab Fighters Attack Southern Border Town

Heavy fighting broke out Friday close to Somalia's border with Kenya as extremist Shehab fighters launched a dawn attack on the town of Dhobley but were later repelled, fighters on both sides said.

"The fighting was very heavy but we emerged victorious, there are casualties on both sides," a senior commander of the Azania militia group controlling the area told Agence France Presse by phone from the battleground.

Syrian security forces killed a civilian in the flashpoint central city of Homs on Friday, adding to six killed in the province the previous evening, two of them children, activists said.

Turkey Slams Israeli Expansion of East Jerusalem Settlement

Turkey on Thursday slammed Israeli plans to expand a settlement in east Jerusalem and said the move further underlined the need for the world to back the Palestinian bid for full U.N. membership.
