U.S. Calls on Assad 'to Step Down Now'

The White House on Friday called on Syrian President Bashar Assad to "step down now," warning he was taking his country down a "very dangerous path."

In a statement, spokesman Jay Carney condemned the killing of Kurdish opposition leader Meshaal Tamo as well as the beating of a prominent Syrian activist, saying it showed "again that the Assad regime's promises for dialogue and reform are hollow."

Biden Talks Arab Spring, Iraq with Kuwaiti PM

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden met Thursday at the White House with Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah for talks on the Arab Spring and the emirate's thorny ties with Iraq.

The pair discussed a range of issues, "including the changes underway in the region as a result of the Arab Spring, and the importance of resolving outstanding issues between Kuwait and Iraq," the White House said.

Texas Fires Kill 4, Destroy More than 1,000 Homes

One of the most devastating wildfire outbreaks in Texas history left more than 1,000 homes in ruins Tuesday and stretched the state's firefighting ranks to the limit, confronting Gov. Rick Perry with a major disaster at home just as the GOP presidential contest heats up.

More than 180 fires have erupted in the past week across the rain-starved Lone Star State, and nearly 600 of the homes destroyed since then were lost in one catastrophic blaze in and around Bastrop, near Austin, that raged out of control Tuesday for a third day.

The stuttering U.S. economy added no jobs in August amid recession fears and political turmoil over the government's finances, bleak official data showed Friday.
