Ukraine Truce Upheld for First Time Says Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Saturday that the Western-backed truce signed in Minsk in February had been respected this week for the first time, despite pro-Russian rebels claiming a civilian had been killed.

"I have some good news. There has been no shooting on the front for a week," Poroshenko said in televised remarks. "This is the first week that the Minsk agreements are being implemented."

Speaker: Iran MPs to Have Say on Nuclear Deal in Late Sept

Iranian lawmakers will have the chance to give their opinions on the nuclear deal with major world powers at around the end of September, parliament speaker Ali Larijani said Saturday.

Larijani did not, however, say whether parliament would be given a vote on the agreement, which provides for lifting sanctions on Iran in exchange for rolling back Tehran's nuclear program.

EU's Mogherini Says Refugee Problem here to Stay

EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini said the refugee influx, which has opened deep divisions in the bloc, is here to stay and member states must adjust to that new reality.

"It is here to stay; the sooner we accept it, the sooner we will be able to respond effectively (and) united as Europeans," Mogherini said after a two-day informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.

Finnish PM Offers to Host Refugees at Country Home

Speaking on state television the centrist premier said the house, which is situated over 500 kilometers north of the capital Helsinki in the Kempele area, was "not being used much at the moment".

Spanish police said they arrested an 18-year-old Moroccan woman on Saturday accused of preparing to travel to Syria to join the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

Amnesty Says Refugees Attacked by 'Thugs' on Greek Island

Refugees on the Greek island of Kos were attacked in the early hours of Friday by "thugs" with bats, telling them to "go back to their countries", rights group Amnesty International said.

Amnesty staff witnessed "a violent attack on refugees" by a group of between 15 and 25 people on the island, the group said in a statement, adding that riot police had used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

'Trained Assassin' Kills Two at Bangladesh Shrine

Two men were slaughtered inside an Islamic Sufi shrine in the Bangladesh port city of Chittagong on Friday in an attack police said was carried out by a "trained and unknown assassin."

The murderer escaped after slitting the throats of the shrine's head custodian and his assistant in the neighborhood of Bayezid Bostami, Chittagong police commissioner Abdul Jalil Mondal told AFP.

A British judge on Friday granted bail to high-profile radical preacher Anjem Choudary, who faces charges for inviting support for the Islamic State jihadist group through social media.

The 48-year-old Choudary, who has been frequently interviewed by British and U.S. media on his views on Islam and the Middle East, was arrested last month and has indicated he will plead not guilty.

Police: Two Men Arrested over Bangkok Attack Unlikely the Bomber

Thai police on Friday said neither of the two men detained over the deadly Bangkok attack last month were believed to be the main bombing suspect -- seen on CCTV wearing a yellow t-shirt and placing a rucksack under a bench at Erawan shrine moments before the blast.

The two foreign suspects -- identified as Adem Karadag and Yusufu Mieraili but whose nationalities remain unconfirmed -- are thought to be part of a group behind the August 17 blast at the religious shrine that killed 20 people.
