Venice Gondola Accident Kills German Tourist

A gondola and a vaporetto waterbus collided Saturday on Venice's Grand Canal, killing a 50-year-old German tourist and badly injuring his young daughter, local media reported.

The accident happened around mid-day near the canal city's famous Rialto Bridge as the public transport waterbus maneuvered toward a stop, Italy's Ansa news agency said.

Four Dead in Kenya Attack Blamed on Somali Shebab

An attack blamed on Somali Islamist insurgents left four people dead in eastern Kenya and prompted hundreds to flee into the bush, authorities and the Red Cross said Saturday.

"There was an attack (near) Garissa," a high-ranking interior ministry official, Mutea Iringo, told AFP. "Heavily armed Shebab carried out a raid on a police post in Galmagala. A police officer died."

Japan Fireworks Festival Blast Claims First Death

A 44-year-old woman who suffered severe burns in an explosion at a fireworks festival in western Japan two days ago became the first person to die from the accident on Saturday, police said.

Hiromi Takeuchi was one of 60 people injured in the blast which ripped through food and drink stalls set up to entertain visitors at an annual festival outside the ancient capital of Kyoto.

Report: Erdogan Says PKK Fighters still in Turkey

Turkey's prime minister has accused the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) of failing to withdraw its fighters from Turkey as agreed under a peace process, press reports said Saturday.
