17 Afghan Civilians Killed in Roadside Bomb

A Taliban bomb in western Afghanistan on Tuesday killed 12 women, four children and one man traveling in a three-wheel minivan, officials said, adding that at least seven other passengers were wounded.

"Unfortunately as a result of this blast, 12 women, four children and one man have been killed and five children, one man and one woman have been wounded," Herat province police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi told AFP.

Greek Coastguard Rescues 142 Migrants off of Crete

The Greek coastguard on Tuesday rescued 142 migrants off the island of Crete after their boat began to take on water, officials and reports said.

According to the Athens News Agency, the coastguard rescued 77 men, 24 women and 38 children of Syrian and Afghan origin.

Bombers Targeted Giant Buddha Idol in India

Attackers who staged serial blasts at one of Buddhism's holiest sites this week also placed a bomb on a giant stone-carved idol of the Buddha that did not explode, police said Tuesday.

Ten small devices went off early Sunday in the Bodh Gaya temple complex in eastern Bihar state, wounding two monks, while three others were defused before they could explode in the historic shrine.

Knox Murder Appeal to Begin in Italy on Sept. 30

An appeal trial over the murder of a British student in Italy is to begin on September 30 after Italy's top court overturned the acquittal of American Amanda Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

The two were initially convicted in 2009 for the frenzied murder of Meredith Kercher in Perugia in what prosecutors was a sex game gone wrong, then absolved on appeal in 2011 after nearly four years in prison.

Somali Shebab Kill at Least One in Mogadishu Market Bomb

Somalia's Shebab insurgents killed at least one person Tuesday when they set off a homemade bomb in the capital's main market, busy with shoppers preparing for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Shebab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab said its fighters had set off an improvised explosive device targeting security officials in Mogadishu's Bakara market, claiming to have killed three officials and wounded three others.
