Greek Police Evict Immigrants from Athens

Police said Saturday they had rounded up about 2,000 people in an operation to evict undocumented immigrants from central Athens, claiming that "national survival" was at stake for debt-choked Greece.

The aim of the operation was "to send them back to their countries of origin, close the borders and ensure that Athens returns to being a lawful city with a quality of life," police spokesman Christos Manouras said.

Gunmen Kidnap 4 Foreigners, Kill 2 Sailors in Nigeria

Gunmen attacked a barge belonging to an oil services company off the coast of Nigeria on Saturday, kidnapping four foreigners and killing two Nigerian sailors, the navy said.

"Four expatriates are reported to have been kidnapped from the vessel. Two sailors were killed," navy spokesman Commodore Kabir Aliyu said, adding that the nationality of those abducted had yet to be ascertained.

Floods which hit parts of North Korea in recent weeks killed 169 people and left 400 missing, the state news agency said Saturday, sharply updating earlier casualty figures.

It said the floods and torrential rain between late June and the end of July also made 212,200 people homeless and washed away or inundated 65,280 hectares (161,310 acres) of cropland.
