Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel announced on Thursday that army forces will deploy in “all neighborhoods” of the northern city of Tripoli, revealing also that a security plan to be implemented in the North has started to take shape.
"I am relieved that we have set some main points to be adopted in the security plan,” Charbel said after two-hour talks with northern figures at North and Tripoli Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar's house.
He pointed out, however: “We will wait to reach consensus over them in the meetings to be held in the coming days.”
Charbel assured that the army will deploy in Tripoli regions “where no soldiers are currently present.”
“We draw a red line on army and security forces. They do not follow any faction.”
“There are some complaints against few members, but this does not mean attacking institutions entirely,” the caretaker minister clarified.
Charbel expressed that the mission is “tough.”
He added: “And we still have to provide security devices, necessary logistics and the needed members before implementation.”
“Sheikh al-Shaar is coordinating with everyone.”
He also vowed to arrest all armed men.
“Those carrying weapons will be arrested until peace prevails and we disarm all the Lebanese,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Mufti al-Shaar thanked the state for “its attention and for following up on all issues in Tripoli.”
"Security is the first step,” he said after the talks. “The second step will include rescuing operations and paying compensations for those affected in the clashes.”
“We put our hands together today so the security and stability prevail in all Tripoli's and the North's regions. The state's authority will prevail in all areas.”
