Suspected al-Qaida gunmen killed three policemen in an attack Sunday on a checkpoint at the entrance to the southern town of Seyoun, a Yemeni security official said.
"Armed men, probably members of al-Qaida, opened fire on the checkpoint," killing three and wounding two others, the official said.
The assailants managed to escape in a car.
Al-Qaida militants have stepped up attacks on security forces from strongholds in south and southeast Yemen.
