Ailing Chirac Doing 'Well' after Kidney Op

Ailing former French president Jacques Chirac underwent successful kidney surgery on Monday, associates of the 81-year-old told Agence France Presse.

"It went very well and he is doing fine," one said, adding that Chirac would be spending several days recovering at the Paris hospital which carried out the operation.

Chirac, who suffered a stroke in 2005, has been in poor health for several years and has recently appeared hesitant and shaky on his feet during his increasingly rare public appearances.

Chirac, a Gaullist, was France's president from 1995 to 2007 and twice previously served as prime minister, from 1974 to 1976 and from 1986 to 1988. He was also mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995.
