Owner of Expired Meat Depot Gets 1 Year in Jail

A Beirut judge issued a one year prison sentence against a businessman for trading in expired meat, the state-run National News Agency reported on Friday.

Judge Bassem Taqieddine also imposed a LL50 million fine on Ahmed Mohammed Yassine, NNA said.

Authorities found expired meet and chicken in his depot in Ashrafiyeh in 2011.

Several scandals of expired food have rocked Lebanon in the past years.

The biggest scandal was in 2012 when the International Company for Meat and Food Trade's warehouses, owned by Suleiman and Samih Mustafa Natour, were raided for knowingly selling expired food.

The Natour brothers were sentenced in October this year to prison and the payment of LL1 million each.
