Strike Shuts Yemen Airports for Hours
Air traffic in Yemen stopped for hours on Monday as staff went on strike over a financial dispute with the government.
Five flights scheduled to leave Sanaa International Airport in the morning were grounded, the airport's director general Khaled Ahmed al-Shayef told Agence France Presse, as traffic at other airports also came to a halt.
The civil aviation union protested after the "finance minister withdrew $50 million from the funds of the authority, channeling them in public financing," a union member said.
The strike ended with Transport Minister Waed Abdallah Badhib promising workers the amount would be refunded by Wednesday, following orders by President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi.
"It has been agreed to suspend the strike till Wednesday," the minister said, addressing striking workers at the airport in Sanaa.
