The General Director of the Rafik Hariri University Hospital, Dr. Wassim Wazzan, resigned on Tuesday following several sit-ins held by employees, who are demanding reforms, the state-run National News Agency reported.
Health Minister Wael Abou Faour announced that Wazzan handed his resignation over to the ministry for consideration, the NNA said.
On Friday, Abou Faour said that RHUH could be shut down if the state didn't take the necessary measures to implement reforms.
Wazzan said in an interview on Friday that “the medical institution is facing a financial crisis, and it has been a target for campaigns since its establishment.”
He pointed out that the solution to RHUH crisis is to assign a new board of directors and pay for the hospital suppliers, doctors and let the state take care of the maintenance.
The 1,064 hospital employees had announced that they will escalate protests if the crisis wasn't resolved.
Recent media reports emerged about corruption and shortage in medical supplies, in addition to the incapability of the hospital to receive patients.
