Aoun Wants to Be Part of 'Integrated Triangle' with Nasrallah, Hariri

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun announced on Wednesday that he wants to be part of an "integrated triangle" along with Hizbullah and al-Mustaqbal Movement.

"We want everyone to reach an understanding for Lebanon's sake and interest," Aoun said in an interview aired on al-Manar television on Wednesday evening.

He explained: “We should form an integrated triangle, (Hizbullah leader) Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, (al-Mustaqbal Movement head MP) Saad Hariri and I.”

"And we cannot dismantle this triangle.”

The FPM leader's statement comes on the eve of a fifth parliamentary session dedicated for electing a new president.

MPs failed for four consecutive sessions to elect a new head of state.

In the first electoral round, no nominee was able to gather the required number of votes to win the race. And quorum was not secured in the second, third and fourth rounds, which blocked the possibility of holding a voting session.

While the March 14 coalition publicly announced backing Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea in his presidential race, Aoun said he aspires to become a consensual nominee and garner the support of al-Mustaqbal bloc.

In a separate matter, the Change and Reform bloc head said collaboration is ongoing between different factions “to restore normalcy in Lebanon.”

"Until now we managed to form a cabinet, adopt a security plan, and appoint public employees,” he said.

The Christian leader also discussed during the interview the liberation of the South, which is celebrated on May 25 of every year.

"The resistance is a right for all people whose land is occupied, and it is their duty to liberate it,” Aoun considered.

“The Israeli danger is continuous,” he remarked.

Asked about President Michel Suleiman's statement on the people-army-resistance equation, Aoun said: “This is wrong because without people's support there is no resistance and without the army, resisting becomes difficult.”

He also revealed that a defense strategy was not discussed at the national dialogue sessions, saying that looking into means to disarm Hizbullah was tackled instead.
