Yemen Fighting Killed at Least 200 within Week

At least 200 people were killed on the outskirts of the Yemeni capital in fighting during the past week between Shiite rebels and Sunni militiamen, the government said Monday.

Rescue teams retrieved 53 bodies during the day, "bringing the total pulled by ministry teams since September 16 to 200 bodies," the health ministry said in a statement carried by Saba state news agency.

It said emergency workers also evacuated 461 people wounded in the clashes.

The bodies were pulled from the districts of Al-Nahda and Al-Salam. Some were also found at the headquarters of the army's Sixth Division and the religious Iman University, scenes for fierce fighting, it said.

Ambulance teams were still combing the neighborhoods, the head of emergency services at the ministry, Dr. Ali Saria said in the statement.

Shiite Huthi rebels seized Sunday key government buildings and ministries in a lightening advance after days of raging battles on the outskirts of Sanaa and northern provinces.

A UN-brokered peace deal was signed Monday between President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, and main political parties, including the rebels.
