Mustaqbal: Democratic System Arabs Aspire for Respects Religious Freedoms

The Mustaqbal bloc stressed on Tuesday that the religious diversity in Lebanon helps spread the culture of moderation and forgiveness.

It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “The democratic system that the Arab people are aspiring for respects religious, individual, and political freedoms without causing tensions with various minorities.”

It added in response to Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi’s recent statements: “This system recognizes all social and religious constituents in the Arab world.”

“Lebanon is seeking to bolster fraternal ties with Syria based on mutual respect and taking into consideration the Syrian people’s right to achieve freedom and democracy in its political system,” it continued.

Addressing the government’s approval of the electricity draft law, the Mustaqbal bloc commended it for taking into consideration some of the opposition’s reservations.

Al-Rahi told Al-Arabiya television on Thursday that sectarian tensions between Sunnis and Shiites may emerge if the Syrian government is overthrown.

“If the regime changes in Syria, and the Sunnis take over, they will form an alliance with the Sunnis in Lebanon, which will worsen the situation between the Shiites and the Sunnis,” al-Rahi said.

He warned that the Christians will pay the price if the Muslim Brotherhood succeeded Syrian President Bashar Assad.
