Egypt Welcomes Mustaqbal-Hizbullah Dialogue, Vows Support for Lebanon

Egypt on Monday welcomed the dialogue between al-Mustaqbal Movement and Hizbullah, calling for supporting and assisting Lebanon.

In a statement published by state-run al-Ahram newspaper, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry said: “We hope that this dialogue maintains stability in Lebanon and paves the way for resolving the problems of this important Arab country.”

The first dialogue session was held last Tuesday under the sponsorship of Speaker Nabih Berri. The two parties expressed their willingness for engaging in a serious dialogue that would lead to defusing the sectarian tensions.

Shoukry urged the Lebanese political parties to agree on what is good for their country and avoid letting the situation in the Arab region affect their country negatively.

Shoukry also encouraged the parties to “benefit from the talks to elect a president as soon as possible.”

“It is important to take a step toward electing a president. The presidential post has been vacant for more than 7 months despite the importance of this post for the stability of state institutions,” Shoukry stressed.

Describing Lebanon as an “important symbol for coexistence in the region,” the Egyptian minister urged the international community to offer it “full support and assistance.”
