Gemayel Says Syrian Infiltration into Border Towns Unacceptable

Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel stressed on Saturday that his party’s position on the Syrian infiltration into the Lebanese territories in the eastern Bekaa valley is a matter of principle.

“Sovereignty can’t be divided, it’s either complete or doesn’t exist, especially if a non-Lebanese army enters the Lebanese border and assault peoples’ privacy,” Gemayel said.

In a second incident this week, Syrian troops entered the outskirts of Arsal village on Thursday and shot dead a Syrian national living there.

Earlier this week, Syrian tanks entered the same region in a brief incursion that raised fears of the revolt against the regime in Damascus spilling over into Lebanon.

Gemayel added: “this is not acceptable, under any circumstances.”

He noted that the position of the party “comes from its historical constants and convictions.”

Concerning the fear over Christians’ existence in the East, Gemayel said “no doubt there are some concerns on them, but the question remains how to deal these fears.”

He wondered what other alternative is there for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon probing the assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri “We have no other choice since they don’t trust the Lebanese judiciary, how will the families of the martyrs know who killed their sons or relatives?”
