The seat of the Maronite church, the Lebanese Forces and Marada Movement are likely to approve an initiative launched by Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun on the presidential deadlock, Change and Reform bloc sources said Monday.
“If we agree, not a single side would have an excuse to reject it,” the sources told al-Akhbar newspaper.
The sources accused the Kataeb Party of being “hesitant,” saying its leader, former President Amin Gemayel, is “not serious.”
The initiative of Aoun, who heads the Change and Reform bloc, sets four solutions to the presidential crisis, at the forefront the election of a president directly from the people in two phases, first by the Christians, who would eliminate candidates and on a second phase by the Lebanese people.
According to Aoun, another solution would be to hold a popular referendum. The candidate who garners most votes would be elected by the parliament as a new president.
The initiative also includes the possibility of electing the Maronite candidate who has the majority of representation at the parliament, while the fourth is staging the parliamentary elections ahead of the presidential polls based on a new electoral law that provides equality between Christians and Muslims.
