General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim held talks on Saturday with Pope Francis I in the Vatican.
Ibrahim, accompanied by a delegation from the General Security directorate, discussed with the pontiff the situation of Christians in the region.
They also addressed during their ten-minute meeting the vacuum in the presidency in Lebanon, said a General Security statement.
The pope showed interest in the situation in Lebanon and Ibrahim presented him with an icon that dates back to the 18th century.
Lebanon has been without a president since May 2014 when the term of Michel Suleiman ended without the election of a successor.
Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have thwarted the polls.
