Report: New U.S. Bill Increases Sanctions on Hizbullah

U.S. sanctions against Hizbullah is back in the spotlight following a proposal reportedly put forward by two U.S. MPs at the House of Representatives for a bill that “increases pressure and sanctions on the party,” al-Joumhouria daily reported on Friday.

The bill will be subject to voting at the Foreign Affairs Committee and the House of Representatives, it added.

It includes the call of President Donald Trump to determine whether Hizbullah should be labeled as a “transnational criminal organization or an important foreign drug trafficking organization.”

If the party is named one of these two descriptions, this allows the US Treasury Department, in cooperation with the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs, to impose additional sanctions on the party and its affiliates abroad and its supporters.

Hizbullah is branded a "terrorist" organization by the United States and targeted with economic sanctions.
