The son of 2016 U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has announced he is running for Congress in the state of New Hampshire, pushing a liberal platform similar to that of his senator father.
Levi Sanders announced late Monday that he was entering the race for New Hampshire's open District 1 seat, which is held by a Democrat who is not seeking re-election.
"This is a unique opportunity to listen to the hard working men and women of New Hampshire about the issues that matter to them," Sanders said in a statement on his campaign website.
Sanders, 48, describes himself as a political and legal analyst.
"For over 17 years, I have represented the working class who have been beaten up by the system," he said on his website.
"It is time to demand that we have a system which represents the 99 percent and not the 1 percent who have never had it so good."
Sanders joins a crowded field including seven other Democrats in their party's primary to be held on September 11, less than two months before the November mid-term congressional elections.
Three Republicans are also running for the open seat, which has emerged as one of the most competitive races in the country.
The younger Sanders' politics lean left like those of his father, who represents neighboring Vermont as an independent in the U.S. Senate.
Levi Sanders supports a "Medicare for All healthcare system," tuition-free college, equal pay for women, and a minimum wage "which allows people to work 40 hours a week without being in poverty."
He is also demanding urgent action to address the opioid abuse crisis, and backs "sensible gun legislation."
It is not just the politics that are similar. Levi's eyes and receding hairline are mirror images of his father's and he looks about as rumpled in a suit as the famously disheveled Bernie.
