Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday urged Hizbullah's supporters to turn out heavily in the upcoming parliamentary elections in order to “immunize the resistance politically.”
In order to achieve the objective, Hizbullah must ensure a “strong presence” in parliament, government and the presidencies, Nasrallah told an electoral rally in the South via video link.
Hizbullah's chief reminisced that in 2006, the Lebanese government and its then-prime minister, Fouad Saniora, “ordered the Army Command, during the July War, to confiscate any truck carrying arms to the resistance.”
“One truck was confiscated and he who made the decision was betting on a clash between the resistance and the army, but the wisdom of the two parties and political interventions contained the situation at the time – though difficultly due to the insistence of the then-premier on his decision,” Nasrallah explained.
“Nowadays, inside and outside Lebanon and in the U.S. and the Gulf there are new bets on this clash and this battle. Our guarantee is having a strong presence in state institutions. In 2006, the strongest guarantee was represented in Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri,” Nasrallah added.
He cautioned voters that “on some rival lists, there are friends, but there are also enemies.”
Turning to the CEDRE economic conference that was held on Friday in Paris, Nasrallah warned that Hizbullah might organize “street protests” to confront any attempt to "impose new taxes on the poor and low-income citizens."
