Nasrallah Urges 'Precise Commitment' to Vote Result in Forming 'National Unity Govt.'

Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah lamented Friday that the draft Cabinet line-ups that are being circulated “cannot be described as formats for a national unity government,” urging “precise commitment” to the results of the May parliamentary elections.

“After elections we called for expediting the formation of the government, and we're still calling for that and our call is not linked to concerns over the regional situations,” Nasrallah said in a televised address on the latest local and regional developments.

He added: “If anyone is betting on certain changes that might serve their interest in the government -- and I'm not accusing the PM-designate – they should stop their bets, seeing as the regional changes are in favor of our axis, whether in south Syria or Yemen, specifically its western coast.”

“Our call for speeding up the formation process is based on national calculations and needs that are related to the social and economic situations and to preventing a power vacuum,” Nasrallah went on to say.

He emphasized that there should be “clear and unified standards for the formation of governments and these standards should apply to everyone.”

Nasrallah decried that the formats that are being circulated “cannot be described as formats for a national unity cabinet.”

“It is not a national unity cabinet when you overlook certain parliamentary blocs or groups or some small sects. Why are Alawites and Syriacs being excluded?” he explained.

“Everyone should be represented in a national unity Cabinet and we call for precise commitment to the results of the parliamentary elections,” Nasrallah urged.

Nasrallah's remarks suggest that his party might press for giving a government seat to a member of the Hizbullah-allied Sunni parliamentary bloc.

Other obstacles hindering the government formation process are the share that should be given to the Lebanese Forces and the representation of MP Talal Arslan.

Separately, Nasrallah stressed that Syrian refugees who want to return to Syria “should be allowed to do so without restrictions on their movement.”

“In light of the nature of our strong relation with the Syrian leadership, we in Hizbullah want to benefit from this situation in order to help in the refugee file,” he added.

Nasrallah also revealed that Hizbullah will “communicate with the Syrian refugees” and will “announce a mechanism for receiving applications from the refugees.”

“We will prepare lists in cooperation with Lebanon's security agencies and Damascus to return the biggest number of refugees seeking a safe and voluntary return,” he added.

“We in Hizbullah have prepared a file to help refugees in returning and we have tasked ex-MP Nawwar al-Saheli with this file. We will also form popular committees in all regions to facilitate communication,” Nasrallah went on to say.
