U.S. Diplomat Warns of Consequences if COVID-19 Hits Refugees Encampments

Former U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain & Deputy State Department Spokesman Adam Ereli on Wednesday warned of the consequences if the novel COVID-19 virus hits encampments of refugees deployed in various countries.

“You think NewYork has problems, just wait til COVID hits millions of internally displaced people and refugees in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Kenya and Gaza,” said Ereli in a tweet.

The former ambassador described those countries in the same tweet as “high density populations where social distancing is almost impossible and suffers from a failure of sterilization and health care efforts ... a time bomb,” he said.

More than a million Syrian refugees live in Lebanon since the Syria war erupted back in 2011.

The U.S. recorded a big daily jump of 26,000 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to more than 189,000. The death toll leaped to over 4,000, including more than 1,000 in New York City.
