Syrian National Council to Lebanese People: Agreements between Two Countries Must Be Revised
The Syrian National Council stressed on Wednesday that it seeks to establish strong ties between Syria and Lebanon that respect the sovereignty and independence of each country.
It said in an open letter to the Lebanese people: “To this end, the Lebanese-Syrian Higher Council should be dissolved and agreements between the two countries should be revised.”
“The revision should establish new agreements that take into consideration the interests of both states,” it continued.
The council said that these goals can be achieved once the Syrian revolution is successful and the ruling regime is overthrown.
Furthermore, it said that “proper diplomatic representation between Lebanon and Syria should be established.”
The Syrian National Council said that other pending issues between the two sides, such as the demarcation of the border, especially the Shabaa Farms, would be addressed.
In addition, it pledged to end the “security-intelligence role that has meddled in Lebanese affairs and thwart the smuggling of arms across the border that has made Lebanon an open ground that does not meet the requirements of an independent state.”
It also proposed the formation of a joint investigation committee that would tackle the case of Lebanese prisoners in Syrian jails.
“A free, independent, and democratic Syria recognizes Lebanon as a sovereign state,” it continued.
“It looks forward to pursuing joint projects in various fields where neither side would interfere in the affairs of the other,” it added.
“The two countries consider their religious and ethnic diversity a unique characteristic that they pledge to defend,” it stressed.
“Given these factors, and in respect to the Taif Accord, Syria looks forward to pursuing joint democratic work with Lebanon in order to tackle the pending affairs,” said the council.
“Democracy in Syria is the best support for Lebanon’s independence,” it noted.
“It is an opportunity to put an end to the dark chapter of Lebanese-Syrian ties that have been marred by Syria’s dictatorial regime that has practiced the ugliest forms of meddling and hegemony,” it stressed.
