Lebanese celebrate after national basketball team beats China
Lebanese citizens were ecstatic on Wednesday evening after the national basketball team beat China 72-69 in the quarter finals of the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup that is being played in Indonesia.
Lebanon will now play against Jordan in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The team’s top scorer was Wael Arakji with 32 points.
Arakji said after the game: “We come from a broken country. We come from a country that’s full of sadness. So, we just want to make our people happy.”
Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati described the victory as an “unprecedented achievement in the history of Lebanese sports.”
President Michel Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri also hailed the national team’s win.
“The Lebanese national team’s win over the Chinese team boosts hope that Lebanon will be able to reap the biggest victory, which is the Asian basketball cup, soon,” Aoun tweeted.
“Once again, the Lebanese youth prove that they are special and that they have major capabilities to overcome difficulties. Congratulations!” the President added.
