Former president and Free Patriotic Movement founder Michel Aoun held a meeting Tuesday in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
A statement issued by Aoun’s office said the ex-president briefed Assad on “the dangerousness of the European stance that is rejecting the return of the displaced Syrians to their country and which is seekin to integrate them in the Lebanese society.”
The Europeans are “exerting all forms of pressure to prevent this return, claiming that they are protecting them from the regime in Syria,” the statement added.
Aoun also underscored the “importance of national unity” in Lebanon, noting that “the Lebanese are clinging to it despite all distortion.”
Assad for his part told Aoun that “Syria has been and is still ready to welcome its sons,” adding that “this is an issue that should take place through communication and cooperation between the two states.”
A statement carried by Syria’s news agency SANA meanwhile said that Assad told Aoun that “the Lebanese can create their political and economic stability through dialogue and consensus, and most importantly through clinging to principles instead of betting on changes.”
Assad also expressed his “confidence in the ability of the Lebanese to overcome all problems and challenges,” the statement said.
