Paris urges Israel to respect Lebanon ceasefire commitments
In a regular media briefing, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux called on Israel to fully respect its commitments under the ceasefire and withdraw from its five positions in southern Lebanon.
"France has stood by Lebanon for many months, and we are doing everything in our power to preserve the November 27, 2024 agreement. Regarding the Israeli strikes, we condemn in the strongest terms all strikes that kill civilians,” he added.
Israel has repeatedly bombed Lebanon despite the November ceasefire that brought to an end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah that culminated in two months of open war.
As part of that deal, Israeli forces were to withdraw from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah was to dismantle its forces in the region.
Under U.S. pressure and fearing an escalation of Israeli strikes, the Lebanese government has moved to begin disarming Hezbollah, a plan which the group opposes.
