A Saudi technical committee led by Saudi envoy Prince Yazid bin Farhan arrived Monday in Lebanon to discuss lifting the ban on Lebanese imports.
A senior Saudi official had announced last week that his country plans to imminently bolster commercial ties with Lebanon after Lebanese authorities demonstrated efficacy curbing drug smuggling to the kingdom over the past months.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and President Joseph Aoun welcomed the move.
In 2021, Saudi Arabia announced the suspension of imports from Lebanon, saying shipments were being used for drug smuggling and accusing Beirut of inaction.
Salam said after meeting the delegation that the Saudi move came after a meeting between Salam and Aoun, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
"We are grateful and thankful to them (KSA and the Crown Prince) and I reiterate on this occasion our commitment that Lebanon will not be used as a platform to destabilize the security of its Arab brothers or be a transit point for smuggling drugs or any illegal products," Salam said.
