Israel says killed Palestinian man behind West Bank attack

Israel's military said Tuesday its forces shot dead a Palestinian man they said had killed an Israeli, with the Palestinian health ministry confirming the death near the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.

In a joint statement, the military and the Shin Bet internal security service said forces near Jenin "eliminated the terrorist... who carried out the terror attack against Gideon Perry".

The military said it had arrested five accomplices during the overnight military operation, and killed the Palestinian in an exchange of fire after forces encircled the building.

The Palestinian health ministry said in a statement that Israeli forces killed Sultan Abdulaziz, 22, in the village of Marka, south of Jenin.

Gideon Perry was an Israeli man killed in the Kedumim settlement, in the northern West Bank, in August 2024.

The attacker killed Perry "with a hammer, stole his firearm and vehicle and escaped", the military said.

On Monday, the military said it had launched a raid in the nearby city of Nablus, killing a Palestinian who had killed two soldiers in a ramming attack at the entrance of the city in May 2024.

During the operation, the forces determined that the man, who had barricaded himself inside a building, was armed. The forces opened fire and also arrested several accomplices.

Witnesses told AFP they saw a lot of blood but no body at the house attacked by Israeli soldiers in eastern Nablus.

Violence in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967, has soared since the Hamas attack on Israel triggered the Gaza war in October 2023.

It has not ceased despite the fragile truce in effect in Gaza since October 10.

Israeli troops or settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians -- many of them militants, but also scores of civilians -- in the West Bank since the start of the war, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian health ministry figures.

At least 44 Israelis, including both soldiers and civilians, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations, according to official Israeli figures.
