Aoun: Lebanon committed to framework but Israel practices undermine its effectiveness
President Joseph Aoun on Monday told U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk that Israel's continued destruction of homes and bulldozing of villages in the south constitutes “a direct violation of human rights and a blatant breach of international laws and norms, necessitating international action to put an end to it.”
“Israel has also targeted religious and heritage sites, demonstrating premeditated intentions against both people and property, especially since these sites are not military and do not contain any armed presence,” Aoun added.
He noted that Lebanon is committed to implementing the U.S.-backed framework agreement but fears that “Israeli practices will undermine its effectiveness.”
Lebanon “will not accept the continued violation of its provisions,” Aoun told Türk.
Türk for his part said that the Office of the High Commissioner is monitoring developments in Lebanon, particularly the ongoing Israeli attacks since March 2, in order to prepare a detailed report on the human rights violations.
