Lebanese military delegation to take part in Rome talks with Israel

The Lebanese delegation to the upcoming Rome talks with Israel will include members of the military delegation that had participated in one of the Washington meetings prior to the signing of the framework agreement, al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Friday.

“The military delegation is expected to carry with it the necessary documents to enable the official delegation to effectively engage with the enemy delegation and the American mediator, in order to secure a practical commitment to an actual withdrawal from the occupied territories,” the daily said.

“Given the Washington experience, the military delegation is proceeding with extreme caution and Lebanese authorities find themselves compelled to rely on the role of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to obtain additional support for the idea of expanding and expediting the pilot zones, especially since the enemy had spoken of implementation conditions that would require one to two months for each village, thus perpetuating the occupation for at least five years,” the newspaper added.

Leaks from the meetings of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington meanwhile revealed that he did not receive a direct U.S. request to expedite the withdrawal from Lebanon, al-Akhbar said.
