Sunni MPs meet Berri over amnesty law
A delegation of 14 Sunni MPs on Monday met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and discussed with him the issue of the amnesty law.
Following the meeting, MP Bilal Abdallah stated: “The discussion focused on a single topic: the proposed general amnesty law … We commended the Speaker for his significant national stance, which was evident when he canceled the parliamentary session after failing to reach a consensus on this matter.”
“We also appreciate his continued follow-up on all these details and his commitment to ensuring we reach a resolution. While we are Sunni MPs, our approach to this issue is a national and humanitarian one,” Abdallah added.
MP Abdul Rahman al-Bizri for his affirmed that “the expanded parliamentary meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri was positive and characterized by an atmosphere of understanding and support.” He noted that “Speaker Berri expressed a positive approach to the draft general amnesty law, or what has become known as the law for reducing sentences.”
MP Imad al-Hout meanwhile wrote on X: “The Speaker affirmed his support for everything that enjoys the consensus of the Sunni deputies, which enhances the chances of reaching a national consensus that leads to the approval of the law away from selectivity and narrow calculations. He also confirmed the inclusion of the two draft laws on general amnesty and the abolition of the death penalty on the agenda of the next legislative session ... taking into consideration the demands of the expanded meeting of Sunni deputies.”
