Israel targets southern border towns as brief escalation seems contained
Israeli strikes and shelling targeted overnight into Friday the strategic Ali al-Taher hill and the southern border towns of Houla, Wadi Slouqi, and al Qantara, after a violent day during which a young woman was killed.
Israeli airstrikes on the country's south on Thursday killed a newly-wed woman, as Israel's military said it struck Hezbollah targets after the Iran-backed group attacked its soldiers in the Ali al-Taher ridge with explosive drones.
Later on Thursday, strikes targeted Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Wadi Slouqi, and al-Mansouri, and detonations were carried out in Baraashit.
On Friday at dawn, Israeli forces detonated houses in al-Mansouri. A U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding and a framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon, both reached in June, failed to stop Israeli strikes, shelling and broad demolitions of civilian buildings in southern villages and towns.
Israeli troops still occupy a self-declared "security zone" that runs around 10 kilometers deep inside Lebanese territory along the border. They are particularly focusing on the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge in the Nabatieh area where they say Hezbollah fighters are holed up in "underground" tunnels.
