Shiites need guarantees to disarm, al-Khatib reportedly told Issa
The Head of the Higher Islamic Shiite Council, Sheikh Ali al-Khatib, told U.S. Ambassador Michel Issa that Lebanon's Shiite community did not take up arms by choice, but out of necessity to confront Israeli occupation, Al-Liwaa newspaper reported Wednesday.
During their Tuesday meeting, Khatib rejected designations labeling the Shiite community as "terrorists." He emphasized that Shiites are open to resolving the thorny issue of disarmament, "provided they are given security guarantees and protection to safeguard their future and survival in Lebanon", the daily added.
Issa had said Tuesday after the meeting that the U.S. wants "the interest of the Shiite community" and the return of residents to their homes in southern Lebanon.
