Woman dead as people smuggler tries to run over Lebanese troops
A woman was wounded and eventually died of her wounds when a people smuggler tried to run over Lebanese troops in the outskirts of the eastern town of Arsal, the Lebanese Army said.
“A vehicle equipped with tinted windows and lacking license plates bypassed troops at a military checkpoint, traveling from Syrian territory into Lebanese territory via illegal crossings,” the army said in a statement.
“The driver attempted to run over the checkpoint personnel, posing an imminent danger to their safety. As a result, they were forced to fire warning shots to compel the vehicle to stop. The driver then brought the vehicle to a halt and fled to an unknown destination,” the army added.
It said that upon inspecting the vehicle, it was found to be transporting 12 individuals of Syrian nationality who were being smuggled into Lebanese territory. “A woman among them sustained a gunshot wound, and three other individuals were injured by shattered glass. They were all transported to a hospital for treatment, where the woman later succumbed to her injuries,” the army said.
“An investigation has been initiated under the supervision of the competent judiciary to clarify the circumstances of the incident, and efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the fleeing driver,” it added.
