Hezbollah MP slams statement issued by US and allies

MP Ali Ammar of Hezbollah on Friday said a statement issued by the embassies of the U.S., the UK, Australia, Canada and Japan represented the “peak of lowness and insolence.”

Ammar blasted what he called the “blatant audacity in interfering in the finest details of Lebanese internal affairs -- without any regard for Lebanon’s sovereignty, the independence of its judiciary, diplomatic protocol, or the dignity of the Lebanese people, reaching the point of attempting to determine its national choices and dictate political directions upon it.”

He warned that “the Lebanese authorities' continued turning of a blind eye to these repeated interferences and treating them as normal and customary is completely unacceptable and condemned.”

“National and constitutional responsibility requires the ruling authority to take serious, effective action and put an end to these violations that compromise Lebanon's sovereignty and institutions, constituting an insult against all Lebanese that cannot be tolerated,” Ammar went on to say.

He added that it would have been more appropriate for these countries to “issue a statement rejecting the continuation of Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory” and “condemning the daily aggression against Lebanese sovereignty, the crimes of killing, destruction and displacement, and the persistent violation of international agreements and resolutions.”

“They should have declared their support for the Lebanese people's right --guaranteed by international laws and charters -- to defend themselves and their land by all legitimate means, and called for dialogue and national understanding among the Lebanese, instead of contributing to fueling divisions, inciting strife among them, and defending their enemies," Ammar added.

The five embassies had on Thursday affirmed “strong support for the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the state monopoly of arms and that the state alone should make decisions regarding war and peace.”

“We take note of the steps taken by the Lebanese authorities in the Dahr al-Baydar case and encourage a swift, independent judicial process, free from political interference, that ensures full accountability,” they said, referring to the Hezbollah truck that was seized at the Dahr al-Baydar checkpoint carrying around 800 kilograms of explosives which the party said were intended for defending against Israel.
