The Lebanese army confiscated a large quantity of machinegun ammunitions aboard an Italian ship in the port of the northern city of Tripoli, local newspapers reported on Tuesday.
The cargo of the vessel, which is owned by the Italian company Gremaldi, contained vehicles including two Renault Rapid cars, one of them included a large cache of ammunition.
As Safir daily said the army intelligence moved the car to al-Qobbeh base and launched a probe in the incident.
The daily said that the ship docked on Monday night in Tripoli port coming from the Egyptian port of Alexandria en route from Germany.
The two Rapid cars were imported by the agent A. M.
The daily reported that the cars contained carpets and children’s games, and one of them 15 boxes of ammunition each containing 1,000 bullets used for different kinds of machineguns.
The army swiftly confiscated the two cars, arrested a number of people for investigation and raided several places that the agent might be hiding in.
In April, the Lebanese navy intercepted Lutfallah ll, a cargo ship carrying large quantity of weapons, off the northern coast and towed it to the port of Selaata and then to the navy base in Beirut.
Reports said the vessel had left Libya and was heading to the northern Lebanese port city of Tripoli to unload the arms that would be later transferred to Syria on land.
