IPEMED and Bader Organize a Conference on Lebanon’s Role in ICT Space

The Economic Foresight Institute for the Mediterranean Region, IPEMED, and Bader Young Entrepreneurs Program, are organizing a conference entitled “The Development of a Mediterranean ICT Space – The role of Lebanon in this space” on 12 June in Beirut at the premises of the ESA, a press release said Monday.

Under the Patronage of Lebanese Minister of Telecommunications Nicolas Sehnaoui, the Lebanese conference will be led by Pierre Musso, professor at Télécom ParisTech and co-author of a report published by IPEMED, “Steps towards a med. area – Confidence in the Mediterranean digital society”, which will serve as a basis for discussions.

Other speakers at the event include Dr. Khater Abi habib, Chairman of the KAFALAT group and a founding member of IPEMED, Emmanuele Carboni, Vice-President of Telecom Italia, Jean-Louis Guigou, Delegate General of IPEMED, Shadi Karam, economic advisor to the President of the Lebanese Republic, Nassim Kerdjoudj, CEO of Net Skills (Algeria), Leïla Sawaya, UNDP project manager at IDAL (Investment Development Authority of Lebanon) and Salam Yammout, coordinator of ICT strategy at the Presidency of the Council of Lebanese Ministers.

Lebanese Minister of Telecommunications will conclude the conference.

The computerization of business and contemporary economies constitutes a major transformation comparable to the industrial revolution. So that ICTs can act as a catalyst for economic and human development, it is imperative to set up a comprehensive, multi-sectoral policy at regional level with the aim of creating a common digital area – a Mediterranean society of information and knowledge – along with the appropriate governance.

To debate these issues and determine the role to be played by Lebanon in this space, four round tables have been organized on: setting up a Mediterranean computing cloud, devising industrial strategy and services in line with ICTs, creating a MEDICT investment fund devoted to ICTs, and development perspectives for the sector, in particular Lebanon.
