The Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc said Tuesday that “discussions with allies in the March 14 camp are being held to reach a rescue initiative that saves Lebanon,” warning that Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s call for a constituent assembly is aimed at changing the constitution with the power of arms.
The bloc issued a statement after its weekly meeting at Center House, headed by former Prime Minister MP Fouad Saniora, pointing out that it will be announcing the initiative in the coming days to be examined by President Michel Suleiman before resuming national dialogue on June 11.
Praising the efforts of Suleiman, who called for resuming all-party talks after clashes erupted in the northern city of Tripoli, the parliamentary bloc stressed on the need for “fruitful and effective dialogue, focusing on the main item on the agenda: illegitimate arms.”
The statement said that Nasrallah’s announcement came amid threats voiced by Yehya Rahim Safavi, military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, “who said that Iran has thousands of rockets in Lebanon, which proves that this party is an armed regional hegemony that controls the national decision.”
Mustaqbal denounced the deadly clashes in the northern city of Tripoli, describing statements on army re-deployment in the area as “suspicious” because the army and security forces had previously deployed in the tense area. “So who ordered their withdrawal?” Mustaqbal wondered.
The bloc held Prime Minister Najib Miqati and the government responsible for the security events in Tripoli, calling for urgent measures to protect the city “through efforts to remove weapons from the northern city, as an introduction to remove all illegitimate arms.”
The statement added: “The economic and social hardships are the result of the government’s failure to address various financial and economic issues, which led to unprecedented deterioration in growth indicators.”
