Greece is preparing to close its embassy in Damascus, the foreign ministry said Tuesday, after last week warning about the deteriorating security situation there.
"The foreign ministry is closely observing and constantly evaluating the state of security and has put under way the closure of the embassy of Greece in Damascus," it said in a statement.
Last week the ministry had issued a warning about what it described as a "rapid deterioration" of the state of security in Syria after 16 months of conflict that activists say has killed over 19,000 people.
Many European countries have already announced the closure of their embassies in the Syrian capital.
