Positive Signs Loom in Horizon on Resumption of National Dialogue
President Michel Suleiman will resume his efforts on Monday to bring back all the members of the all-party talks to the national dialogue table as the only solution to Lebanon’s lingering problems, his sources said.
The sources told An Nahar daily published Saturday that he will make new contacts on Monday will the parties from across the political spectrum as part of his efforts to convince the March 14 opposition into ending its boycott of the dialogue.
Suleiman vowed during the presidential Iftar on Wednesday to restart his contacts to guarantee the resumption of the all-party talks on August 16.
Informed sources said March 14 MP Butros Harb’s announcement that Suleiman informed him about the handing over of all telecom data to the security forces investigating assassination plots was a major progress that could pave way for the opposition’s participation in the dialogue.
The March 14 alliance has tied its participation in the national dialogue to the government’s approval to hand over the telecom data, including International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), to security agencies investigating the attempted assassinations of Harb and Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea.
The reported delivery of the data and the IMSI to the police would remove the major stumbling block preventing the coalition from participating in the all-party talks, the sources said.
They added that Hizbullah would also make clarifications on the defense strategy that would pave way for the resumption of dialogue.
Hizbullah MP Mohammed Raad created controversy after saying the country is in no need for a defense strategy because it is still in the liberation stage.
