Miqati Lashes Out at Mustaqbal over Electoral Draft Law, Says Reaction ‘Unjustified’

Prime Minister Najib Miqati considered on Thursday al-Mustaqbal movement’s reaction regarding the cabinet’s approval of the electoral draft law “unjustified” and “incomprehensible” given that it hasn’t been put into effect yet.

“The parliament will decide upon the issue and will adopt the decision that it considers adequate therefore there was no need for all this contrived fuss,” Miqati told As Safir newspaper.

The cabinet on Tuesday approved an electoral law based on proportional representation and 13 districts.

The premier said that he committed to the ministerial statement, which included setting a new electoral law based on proportional representation.

“The parliament is responsible for the rest as those who reject the draft law will merely have to provide the required majority to modify or change it,” Miqati stated.

He told the daily that “some became hysterical only because this cabinet adopted the electoral draft law,” noting that they are “sensitive” towards any achievement made by the government.

“They want me to resign and to replace the cabinet with a caretaking one,” Miqati added.

He expressed surprise over the “incitement” practiced by those who reject the draft law through using sectarian rhetoric, denying that the draft law was made to give powers to Shiite Hizbullah against the Sunnis.

“Whoever is saying this doesn’t understand the real meaning of proportionality,” Miqati pointed out.

The March 14 alliance rejected the electoral draft law adopted by the cabinet, arguing that it comes in favor of Hizbullah.
