Palestinian Hurt in Possible Jerusalem Race Attack
Israeli police have launched a probe into an attack against an east Jerusalem Palestinian, who was allegedly beaten by a group of Jewish youths in the city's western sector, a spokesman said on Friday.
According to Micky Rosenfeld, in the early hours of Thursday morning "an Arab (man) and Israeli who were in the Katamonim neighborhood, they were returning from a club. They were approached by a number of youths, and there was a fight. The Arab was taken to hospital with a broken leg.
"Police arrived at the scene and opened an investigation," Rosenfeld said. "The background to the incident is not clear yet," he said, noting that "they had been drinking.
"It seems to be more of a social issue."
But Ibrahim Abu Ta'a, 28, who was the victim of the attack, told AFP he was beaten by a group of young Israelis when they realized he was an Arab.
Aba Ta'a, a hotel employee, said the attack occurred while he was accompanying a female colleague in the Jewish neighborhood.
The incident comes less than a month after a 17-year-old east Jerusalem resident was subjected to a violent hate attack in the city center.
Nine Israeli teenagers, eight of them minors, were recently charged of incitement to racism, incitement to violence, and aggravated- and racially-motivated assault for their part in the August 17 attack that nearly cost Jamal Julani his life.
