Berri Hails Papal Visit, Describes Meeting with Miqati as ‘Positive’

Speaker Nabih Berri said on the eve of Pope Benedict XVl’s visit to Lebanon that it’s a very “important and historic” trip, Ad-Diyar newspaper reported on Thursday.

“This visit is significant for Lebanon and the Arab region, and it comes to reinforce the Christian-Muslim coexistence,” Berri pointed out.

The pope is due to leave on Friday for a three-day visit to Lebanon, which has been battling to contain an eruption of violence triggered by Syria's bloodshed, including a spate of mass kidnappings.

Benedict is expected to bring a message of peace for the Middle East.

On his meeting with Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Monday, Berri described it as “good and positive.”

He pointed out that the two stressed the government is keen to perform its work and to deal with all the current issues.

Miqati told reporters at Ain al-Tineh that “no one should bet on a dispute between him and the speaker.”

In August, Berri and Miqati traded criticism after the head of AMAL movement accused the government of not exerting strong efforts to resolve the country’s turmoil, prompting the premier to respond.
