Hearing in Sayyed’s Case against Mehlis Set for May 18

Former General Security chief Jamil Sayyed’s press office announced on Monday that a French court had set a hearing in his lawsuit against former chief U.N. investigator investigator Detlev Mehlis on May 18.

Sayyed had filed a defamation lawsuit against Mehlis after the latter had adopted testimonies of false witnesses in the investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, which led to his imprisonment in 2005 for nearly four years.

The lawsuit was filed in 2008 after Mehlis had made statements to LBC in support of Sayyed’s then imprisonment over allegedly being involved in the assassination.

An international warrant was issued against Mehlis so he could be interrogated in the affair, but complications thwarted holding the hearing until this week.

He had claimed international immunity given his position as an international investigator, but the claim does not stand since the lawsuit was filed three years after he was relieved of his duties as the head of the investigation committee.
