Cairo to Host African Champions League Play-Off

The African Champions League play-off between Wydad Casablanca of Morocco and Simba of Tanzania will be staged in Cairo on May 28, the organisers said Friday.

Wydad and Simba lost in the qualifying competition to defending champions TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who were disqualified last weekend for fielding an ineligible player.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) officials said defender Janvier Bokungu had featured in several African ties for Mazembe despite being contracted to Tunisian club Esperance until the middle of this year.

The winners between Wydad and Simba at Petrosport Stadium in the Egyptian capital join Al-Ahly of Egypt, Esperance and Mouloudia Alger of Algeria in Group B of the African Champions League.

Whoever loses a game to be decided by a penalty shootout if the teams are level after 90 minutes will get another chance of international glory by competing in the African Confederation Cup against DC Motema Pembe of DR Congo.

Former African champions Wydad are expected to overcome Simba, who admitted this week they were struggling to prepare after the transfer of several stars and the exit of Zambia-born coach Patrick Phiri.
