Aoun Hopes 'Extremists' Will Fail to Control Large Swath of Lebanese

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun expressed hope on Wednesday that “extremists” will fail to control a large swath of the Lebanese.

Following talks with a Hizbullah delegation headed by Ghaleb Abu Zainab, Aoun hailed the understanding reached with the party in 2006.

“Our alliance with Hizbullah will vanquish because it is based on goodwill and holds no grudge against anyone,” Aoun told reporters at his residence in Rabieh.

He lamented however that the alliance had been criticized of being a Maronite-Shiite front against the Sunni sect. “They are mistaken,” he said.

The Change and Reform bloc leader also claimed that the understanding between the FPM and Hizbullah had changed the course of events not just in Lebanon but also in the region.

After his comments, Abu Zainab stressed that the understanding had “blocked turmoil surrounding Lebanon.”

He lauded Aoun for “preventing strife” in Lebanon, and helping Hizbullah consolidate understanding among the society's different factions.
