Army Arrests 11 in Arsal for Arms Possession, Residents Block Roads in Protest

The army arrested 11 people in the Bekaa region of Arsal on Thursday and Friday as part of the security measures it has undertaken in the area, reported the National News Agency Friday.

It said that 11 people, including four Syrians, were arrested for the possession of arms and military equipment.

They were arrested in the outskirts of Arsal near the Lebanese-Syrian border.

The suspects were handed over to the concerned authorities as the army continues its crackdown on assailants linked to the February 1 clashes that broke out in the town.

Later on Friday, LBCI television reported that dozens of Arsal residents burned tires and blocked roads to protest the tight security measures in the town.

“Residents blocked the road with burning tires near the army checkpoint at the town's entrance,” LBCI detailed.

Meanwhile, OTV said that a clash erupted between the army and protesters after a demonstration headed from Arsal towards the al-Labweh checkpoint.

Two officers were killed in clashes that broke out in Arsal as an army patrol was seeking to arrest a wanted suspect.

The patrol was ambushed by unidentified gunmen and the suspect was killed in the ensuing unrest.

The army has since intensified its security around the town in an effort to arrest the assailants.
